Eat The Frog 🐸

Have you heard the saying before?

The phrase "eat the frog" comes from a Mark Twain quote suggesting that if you start your day by eating a live frog, you can go through the rest of the day knowing the worst is behind you. In productivity terms, the "frog" is your most daunting task—the one you're most likely to procrastinate on.

Now, this is something I can struggle with - let's face it, completing those smaller tasks and ticking them off your ist gives such an easy dopamine hit, right? But let's change that!!

I've been working hard to prioritise the big scary tasks first, and so here's three tips that have helped me to tackle my biggest challenges first, hopefully they can help you too!

#1: Identify your "Frog"

Before you can eat the frog, you need to know what it is. Start each day by identifying the one task that will have the greatest impact on your goals if completed. This might be the task you dread the most or the one you've been putting off. By pinpointing this task, you can prioritise it and set yourself up for success.

Tips for identification:

  • Write a To-Do List: List all tasks you need to accomplish. Highlight the one that is most critical.

  • Assess Impact: Consider which task will get you closer to your goals or remove some pressure once completed.

  • Avoid Distractions: Ensure the frog is a meaningful task, not just an urgent but less important one.

#2: Plan & Prepare

Once you've identified your frog, the next step is to prepare to tackle it. Having a clear plan can make the task feel less overwhelming and increase your chances of actually completing it!

Tips for planning:

  • Break it Down: Divide the task into smaller, manageable steps. This makes it less daunting and allows you to track progress.

  • Gather Your Stuff: Before you dive in, make sure you've got all the information and resources you need. This way, you can stay focused and avoid any interruptions!

  • Set a Time Limit: Allocate a specific time to work on the task. This prevents it from dragging on and helps you maintain focus.

#3: Take Action

The key to successfully eating the frog is to take immediate action. Avoid the temptation to delay or make excuses. Starting right away helps build momentum and reduces the mental barrier to task completion.

Tips for taking action:

  • Start with a Countdown: Use a countdown timer to give yourself a short period to begin. The ticking clock can spur you into action.

  • Eliminate Distractions: Create a focused environment by turning off notifications and finding a quiet space to work.

  • Reward Yourself: Give yourself a reward when you have completed the task. It’s a great way to create a positive connection and gives you something to look forward to. Plus, it makes tackling those "frogs" a bit more exciting for next time!

By trying out these tips, you can "eat the frog" and start your day off feeling super productive, rather than procrastinating and letting that "frog" put unwanted stress on your shoulders for another day!

One thing to keep in mind...tackling those tough tasks early on will make you feel awesome for the rest of the day!
